Spend the afternoon learning about the efforts to conserve the Gopher Tortoise which is a candidate species for listing on the Endangered Species Act. Matthew Stoddard was formerly in charge of the team that mapped Tortoise populations throughout the State. Altama Plantation WMA is one of many conservation areas acquired to help bring the number of conserved populations closer to the target of 65 populations. There will be an opportunity to look down a Tortoise burrow using a scoping camera and hopefully see a Tortoise in person.
